Antalya in Turkey is an attractive magnet for visitors, both for the city itself as well as for the many attractive destinations that are just a short distance from it. The city became famous for its turquoise beaches and fantastic waters. Along the beaches visitors will be able to find many groves, including dates, citrus, bananas and olives. The fantastic weather attracts visitors year round, and here are just a few of the main attractions the area has to offer:
1. Laeici- the ancient city within Antalya is located directly above the gorgeous marina. There are three major structures to be noted- an ancient mosque from the Seljuk period, the clock tower of the city, and the Adrianus Gate- an ancient gate from Roman times with three arches that was erected in honour of the Roman emperor Adrianus.
2. The Marina is a gorgeous area where visitors can stroll along the narrow alley ways and visit the city bazaar. This is perhaps Turkey’s biggest open market. Those who are interested can head out to 4×4 trips of the area from here. Another attraction in the area is the Antalya carpet factory, where you will be able to watch the craft of carpet making up close. Those who are happy lying on the beach and enjoying the water sports will be able to do so as well. Sail boats, motor boats, jet skies and a plethora of water sport activities are all available.
3. The archeological museum of Antalya contains a large collection of artifacts from the Stone Age to Roman periods. The complex contains a Roman statue garden and a souvenir shop. The Antalya Ceramics Museum is another interesting locations. It was built inside an ancient Ottoman house and contains exhibitions of ceramics from the area and from various periods throughout history.
4. When in Antalya, it is best to rent a car. There are a plethora of interesting archeological attractions in the region that are well worth the short drive. One of them is the interesting Necrophilis, with its spectacular amphitheatre which is surrounded by mountains. Other attractions in the area include the Mira complex, where you will be able to find burial caves that were dug into the mountain side and are reminiscent of Petra. Finally, the city of Kass is worth a visit, since it is one of the most picturesque and romantic spots in the area.
5. The Kakuba Island is a short boat trip away and it is recommended to join in on one of the many boat trips that take you there. The area contains many ruins dating back to 4th century. The ancient cities that once stood were destroyed in earth quakes, and the trip shows some fantastic vies of the island.
6. Dodan is a river that spills into the Mediterranean Sea. The area contains two separate waterfalls of the Dodan River that spill into fantastic pools surrounded by pine trees and cave dwellings.
The Antalya area enjoys typical Mediterranean weather which makes it comfortable throughout most of the year. Spring and Fall are the most convenient times to visit, since most tourists are gone but temperatures are still around the 25-28 degrees Celsius, so you can also enjoy the beaches of the area.
