Barbados Holiday Guide

Barbados is the easternmost Caribbean island, beautiful with its water and white sand beaches. Water sports such as scuba diving, windsurfing, etc. are numerous; and the South Coast’s moderately rough surf attracts surfers. The West Coast offers the calmer beaches near the hotels. The East Coast is not for swimming but offers views of a majestic rocky coastline. Barbados is a flat coral island with an interior still filled with sugar cane, cotton, livestock, and oil wells with the ability to generate 60% of the island’s oil.

Tourism, however, is the island’s greatest source of income, and is mostly developed on the South and West Coasts. The Barbados National Trust has restored old buildings and created spectacular sites to encourage its attraction to tourists. You can also enjoy historical homes from the 1800’s and 1900’s and get a glimpse of history at the Barbados Museum and in the old plantations.

The local cuisine includes the flying fish, a national delicacy, which is served many places on the island in a variety of dishes. Other local dishes include a golden apple relish made from an apple-like fruit and the famous pepperpot stew.

This holiday destination can be truly enhanced by a stay at Sandy Lane, a luxury 112-room resort in an ancient mahogany grove overlooking the spectacular beach of the Caribbean Sea on Barbados’ West Coast. Sandy Lane experienced a multi-million-dollar expansion and overhaul that preserved the classic elegance while offering a large variety of amenities for their visitors, which often include celebrities, royalty, and leading businessmen. Airport transfers are in a chauffeured luxury car.

For the golfer there are 45 holes of golf on three unique beautifully manicured courses, one of which was designed by Tom Fazio. Its magnificent 55,000-square-foot Clubhouse features panoramic views, an elegant restaurant, and an expansive pro shop.

If you are looking for distinctive jewelry, diamonds, or limited edition timepieces, the Galleria has a collection of the world’s most luxurious brands which you can view there or in the privacy of your suite.

Sandy Lane often offers a Family Fun Package during certain months with discounts on rooms and meals, a supervised Treehouse Club with a playhouse free of charge with unlimited use by children aged 3 to 12 years, and a Den Teen Centre for 13 to 16 year olds. These are located next to the swimming pool so that the children can be free to come and go.
